How to condense your resume to one page in Word?

Let’s make a resume fit to one page in Microsoft Word

When you create your resume on MS Word, you have many options to fit your CV to single page.

First of all, you can try out the inbuilt “shrink one page” command. If you can’t see it, you would need to add this option via customizing quick access toolbar. Before using this option, make a copy of your resume.

  • Focus on key details that match the job ad. This saves space and makes your resume work better. Tailored resumes are the winning ones!
  • Shorten your contact information to basic ones– name, phone, email, LinkedIn. You can place these details right after your name and surname or just next to it.
  • Shorten you margins.
To trim margins in Word, open your document, go to “Layout” or “Page Layout,” click “Margins,” choose “Narrow” or “Custom Margins,” adjust values in the dialog box if needed, and click “OK” to apply changes.
  • Decrease font size in MS Word.
To decrease font size in MS Word, select the text, go to the “Home” tab, find “Font Size,” choose a smaller size. Alternatively, use Ctrl + Shift + < (less than).
  • Insert bullet points.
To insert bullet points in MS Word, go to the “Home” tab, find “Bullets,” click it to add bullets to the selected text. Use Ctrl + Shift + L as a shortcut. Keep bullet points concise, focusing on key achievements and responsibilities.
  • Add multiple columns.
To add multiple columns in MS Word, select the text, go to “Layout” or “Page Layout,” find “Columns,” choose the number of columns. Alternatively, place the cursor where you want and use Alt + Shift + Plus key (+).
  • Adjust line spacing.
To customize line spacing in MS Word, select the text, go to “Home,” find “Line and Paragraph Spacing,” choose your desired spacing (e.g., “1.0” for single, “2.0” for double). Alternatively, use shortcuts: Ctrl + 1 (single), Ctrl + 2 (double), Ctrl + 5 (1.5).
